The Benefit of Mastering Literacy Conventions

When children are starting to learn to read, they need lots of encouragement and feedback to continue the journey and enjoy reading.

In this video, one of our students, 3 year old Andres, demonstrates how he has mastered literacy conventions (e.g. turning pages and reading left to right) as well as some sight words. Confidence and reading ability improve when children know such conventions and begin to build their sight word bank. Readers will have more successful experiences if they have an extensive sight words knowledge because these words are necessary for understanding sentences and building fluency.
