Income inequality affects all nations in the world. This ‘culture of poverty’ over time seems to help individuals to cope with their environment. For example, the ratio of female–to–male annual earnings for full-year full-time workers has been relatively steady at around 0.72 since 1992.

The policy issues become how to design such programs and what is the optimal balance between the “good” effect of more equal income distribution and the bad effects of lower income. This conclusion has a variety of important implications and leads to some pregnant questions. [This is a summary forwarded by David Woodward of three blog articles on global inequality for The Broker’s Inequality Debate, focused on the poverty/carbon nexus, the implications of extreme inequality for economics, and the vicious circle of economic and political inequality.

In pre-1949 China, income inequality was conditioned by the existence of a traditional form of feudalism in the countryside. Nobel Laureate in Economics Angus Deaton of Princeton University talks with EconTalk host Russ Roberts about the economics of trade and aid. Reported in Table 3 are the threshold incomes required to be considered part of the top 1 percent by state. Sociologist Gerhard Lenski has proposed a typology of human societies based on subsistence technology, and the nature of the environment of the society.

An additional important qualification to the implications deriving from the Stolper-Samuelson theorem relate to its assumption that labor and capital are mobile within a country but not internationally. Will they simply be concerned with maximising profit or will they take wider social concerns into account? What we've achieved is a state too constrained to provide the public goods – investments in infrastructure, technology, and education – that would make for a vibrant economy and too weak to engage in the redistribution that is needed to create a fair society.

Rodrik further argues that the fact that China and India participated in foreign trade does not mean that their growth followed increased foreign trade. Now the government was dealing with mass displacement along with rampant poverty that ran across race lines.

Spending inequality has decreased from a ratio of 2.8 percent to 2.4 percent. If women were more affected by the minimum wage, men bore the brunt of the decline in unionization over the least three decades, the survey finds.
