We may call them what we like, but God’s word and definitions still remain correct. The problem with exchanging the truth for a lie is that we not only distort the truth, we set ourselves up to be God. I heard a friend mention she didn’t like to call God “Father” because her earthly father wasn’t a good father. She was letting man define God instead of the other way around. We are doing the same when we decide what God calls evil is really good, or darkness is really light. God’s love is what moves His hand toward us.

The gospel wants to make sure we understand that John is not the Light, so we come to verse 9 and it refers to Jesus as the true Light. The wording in the verse uses the definite article “the” indicating there isn’t just any light, but “the” one and only true Light. This is the same kind of wording Jesus uses when He refers to Himself as the Way, the Truth, and the Life. It is so important that we understand there are not various ways for us to follow or various lights to enlighten us. Only Jesus, the Christ, is able to enlighten every man.

In a secular court of law, those judges that uphold the law and punish disobedience are call “good”. How much better then is our heavenly Father? Should we not also call Him “good” when He takes on the role of perfect judge? But the court case does not end there. You see, our Lord also pleads our case for us. He will not forsake us but will take the power of our sin away. God the judge is also God our Father and will forgive us in the name of Jesus. God becomes our advocate and will bring us into the light so that we might be seen with no blemish and enter into that heavenly kingdom with all the promise of eternity.
