He was right. After my first day of suffering from pruned fingers, I knew pretty quickly that I didn’t want to wash dishes for the rest of my life. Too often in our lives we decide to stick with something that we don’t enjoy doing, perhaps because we think we don’t have a choice. It may be studying within a certain major, working at a job, or serving on a committee. We may do something because of a sense of duty (If I don’t do it, no one else will), because of external expectations (Everyone expects me to follow this career path), or because it’s the safe thing to do (I really want to join the Peace Corps, but I’d better get a job because everyone else is doing that).

You know the kind of person I’m talking about-the one who always has something negative to say, or who knows just how to get under your skin. Perhaps the most difficult thing about this person is that, no matter how hard you try, it seems he or she never appreciates you. I had a camper one summer who fit this description perfectly. As soon as I met her, I knew it was going to be a long week. Not only was she mean to me and the other campers, but she also volunteered negative comments frequently.

A cord of three strands is not quickly broken. --Ecclesiastes 4:12 (NIV) Are there certain people in your life who you know will always be your friends, even if you are miles apart? I had a friend like that in high school. Though we were complete opposites, we were the best of friends, and we always talked about how we would keep in touch when we went to college. My friend and I kept in touch a little bit the first semester of college, but when we got together during the Christmas break, things were not the same.
